How Does Writing Off Software Work With Section 179?
Let’s say you have monthly payments for your software agreement. These payments are typically treated as lease payments that can be expensed and reflected back on your tax return.
You can claim software expenses at year’s end when filing your taxes along with any other business deductions as long as you meet these three requirements for 2022:
- Deductions are itemized
- Deductions are greater than 2% of your AGI
- Total qualifying deductions are $1,080,000 or less as long as you have not purchased more than $2.7 million dollars in asset purchases. After $2.7 million in these asset purchases, the $1,080,000 limit gets reduced dollar for dollar.

What Is The Difference Between Section 179 And Bonus Depreciation?
The difference between the two is that Section 179 has monetary limitations and in 2022, you have up to 100% of bonus depreciation. This is a fancy way of saying that whatever new assets (trucks, units, software, etc.) you purchase in 2022, you can write off 100% of that purchase within the tax year.
